What is eSIM?

The virtual or digital equivalent of the conventional data SIM card is known as an eSIM (the abbreviation for embedded SIM). This is made possible via a microchip that is integrated into your cell phone and enables you to install multiple “eSIM profiles,” which are virtual SIM cards with their own phone numbers and data plans.

The Android 14 Beta 4 update, which Google released last month, added a number of repairs, a “auto-confirm unlock” function, improved system efficiency, and much more.

According to reports, Google has begun developing a new function that would enable customers to quickly and conveniently transfer eSIMs through QR code. Google has reportedly begun laying the groundwork for the eSIM transfer function that it revealed earlier this year, according to a report by 9to5Google. As the feature’s name implies, Android users will be able to natively move their eSIM between devices.

It’s a crucial feature because, as of today, there isn’t a natural mechanism to move an eSIM between Android devices, leaving the carrier with complete control over the procedure. To begin the transfer procedure, the function will ask users to scan a QR code.

We were only able to access this beginning piece because the majority of this functionality is still in development, but @AssembleDebug was able to find a Fast Pair-like UI that shows before scanning the QR code, according to the report.

For comparison, Apple has simplified the eSIM transfer process for iPhones by creating a tool within iOS that allows easy wireless transfer of eSIM between iPhones.

Last month, Google had released the Android 14 Beta 4 update which included an ‘auto-confirm unlock’ feature, a variety of fixes, system performance improvements, and much more.

The ‘auto-confirm’ feature, according to Android researcher Mishaal Rahman, immediately unlocks the user’s phone after they input the PIN properly.

To enable this, however, the PIN must be 6 digits or longer. Rahman has also mentioned new options for the default profile photo in the upgrade. The Android researcher also claims that users can view their phone’s manufacturing year by going to Settings > About phone > Model.

“In Android 14, the ‘ring volume’ and ‘notification volume’ sliders have been entirely split apart, and there is no way to bring them back together. The separation was managed via a DeviceConfig setting in earlier betas, but that flag is no longer in use,” he had noted.
